New Delhi: The political fallout between US President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk escalated sharply on Sunday, with Trump slamming Musk’s newly announced “America Party” as a recipe for “total disruption and chaos.”
In a blistering post on his Truth Social account, Trump said Musk had “gone off the rails,” accusing the Tesla and SpaceX chief of pursuing a “third political party” that would never succeed in America’s entrenched two-party system.
The comments come a day after Musk formally unveiled the America Party in response to Trump’s sweeping tax cuts law, signalling the most significant rupture yet between the two high-profile allies.
Musk, once a vocal Trump supporter and major GOP donor, broke with the president over the tax and spending bill, publicly calling it an “insane spending bill” and warning that it would “bankrupt the country with waste and graft.”
Trump, in his lengthy post, dismissed the viability of Musk’s new party, writing, “He even wants to start a Third Political Party, despite the fact that they have never succeeded in the United States – The System seems not designed for them.
The one thing Third Parties are good for is the creation of Complete and Total DISRUPTION & CHAOS, and we have enough of that with the Radical Left Democrats, who have lost their confidence and their minds!”
The president sought to defend his tax cuts law as the “biggest Bill of its kind in the History of our Country,” but acknowledged it eliminates the federal Electric Vehicle (EV) mandate, a policy Musk had championed.
Trump claimed he had campaigned for two years on scrapping the EV mandate and said Musk had never raised objections, adding, “I was very surprised!”
In a remarkable revelation, Trump also accused Musk of lobbying him to appoint a close friend to lead NASA, only to discover the nominee had never supported Republicans.
“I thought it inappropriate that a very close friend of Elon, who was in the Space Business, run NASA, when NASA is such a big part of Elon’s corporate life,” Trump wrote.
Trump’s response underscores the stakes of the split: Musk, the world’s richest person, has indicated a willingness to spend significant sums on his political ambitions. He reportedly spent over $250 million supporting Trump in the 2024 election but now threatens to challenge the Republican grip on Congress in the 2026 midterms, potentially altering the dynamics of American politics.
Trump, however, was dismissive: “Three parties have never worked,” he told reporters, brushing off Musk’s initiative as “ridiculous” and touting the “tremendous success with the Republican Party.” He suggested the America Party’s creation would only add to political confusion.
The rift marks a dramatic turn in the relationship between two of America’s most prominent public figures, raising questions about the future direction of both the Republican Party and Musk’s new political venture.
As of now, it remains unclear whether Musk’s America Party will attract substantial support or, as Trump suggests, merely serve as a spoiler in the 2026 and 2028 elections. Political observers say the unprecedented clash could have far-reaching implications for American political realignment.
