Thane: As many as 10,000 people participated in a yoga session organised by the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), India's largest container port, at Uran in Navi Mumbai on the occasion of International Yoga Day.
The JNPA claimed the 'Yoga Sangam' was the second largest Yoga session in India held on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Yoga Day was celebrated enthusiastically in Thane city, with inmates of the Central Jail and the mental hospital participating separately.
Thane Central Jail Superintendent Rani Bhosale said 50 inmates, including 20 female under-trial prisoners, performed Yoga postures in the morning hours on Saturday.
"We had planned the Yoga event on a grand scale, but heavy rain forced authorities to organise a truncated session inside a hall with a limited number of participants," Bhosale told PTI.
Thane Mental Hospital conducted yoga sessions on Friday and Saturday, engaging patients and hospital staff, said Dr. Netaji Mulik, Superintendent of the Hospital.
In Uran, Navi Mumbai, the JNPA marked the International Day of Yoga with a massive celebration titled 'Yoga Sangam', claiming it to be the second-largest yoga session in India.
The gathering was organised at JNPA Township under the guidance of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, in collaboration with the Ministry of AYUSH on the theme of "Yoga for One Earth, One Health".
The event was coordinated by RRAP - Central Ayurveda Research Institute, Worli, Mumbai (the Nodal Coordinator for Maharashtra).
A live screening of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's address was also broadcast at the venue.
All participants were provided with yoga kits as a gesture of encouragement for healthy living, the JNPA stated in a release.
JNPA chairperson Unmesh Wagh, officers, and employees attended the event.
Wagh inaugurated a dedicated Yoga Park, spanning 16,500 sq.m. within the JNPA Township. This new park is designed to promote regular wellness practices among residents and port employees.
"It is a moment of pride for JNPA to be chosen as the host venue for a large-scale celebration like Yoga Sangam. Bringing together thousands of participants at the crack of dawn, in an atmosphere of energy and mindfulness, truly reflects the spirit of International Yoga Day," Wagh said.
The JNPA organised various events on the theme of Yoga leading up to International Yoga Day.
