Thane, Jun 30 (PTI) Police have arrested a 34-year-old man from New Delhi, who had been on the run for 13 years after killing a man in Maharashtra's Thane district, an official said on Monday.

A team from the Mira-Bhayandar Vasai-Virar (MBVV) police apprehended Govind Kumar Jagatnarayan Chowdhary from Naya Bazar, New Delhi, in connection with a 2012 murder case, he said.

The accused was wanted for the murder of Sureshkumar Suryanarayan Chowdhary (35), a resident of Bhayandar, senior inspector Pramod Badakh said.

He said that on the intervening night of May 28 and May 29, 2012, the accused, who was a close relative of the victim, allegedly strangled him with a wire, taped his mouth shut and bludgeoned him with a pestle.

The assailant also used a cutter knife and other sharp weapons to inflict injuries on his face, chest, abdomen, and hands, the official said.

He said the accused fled the scene after the killing and evaded arrest for 13 years.

"Our team worked on several fronts, including technical analysis and crucial intelligence inputs, which ultimately helped us confirm the identity of the accused as Govind Kumar Jagatnarayan Chowdhary," the official said.

As per the probe, the motive behind the murder was an illicit relationship involving the victim, he said, adding that further investigations were underway. PTI COR ARU
