Thane, Jul 6 (PTI) Thane Zilla Parishad Chief Executive Officer Rohan Ghuge has stressed the need for cultivators to shift to modern farming methods for sustainable agricultural development.

Ghuge on Saturday joined farmers in paddy sowing activities at Shahapur taluka in Maharashtra's Thane district while braving heavy rains.

Under his guidance, the demonstration of traditional, belt and mechanical rice cultivation and a farmer guidance programme were conducted at Mouje Alyani and Gegaon villages in Shahapur taluka, an official release said.

"Rice cultivation using the belt method was demonstrated at Alyani, while mechanical cultivation techniques were showcased at Gegaon," it said.

During interactions with farmers, Ghuge explained the comparative costs and benefits of traditional, belt, and mechanical farming methods.

He used real-life examples to convey the importance of transitioning to modern farming techniques for sustainable agricultural development, the release said.

Ghuge also urged farmers to expand tur cultivation in the future and emphasised the importance of forming farmer producer companies to market rice and vegetables, explaining how such entities can help generate higher financial returns for producers.

Recognising the vital role of women in agriculture, Ghuge also pledged support to women's self-help groups.

In another initiative under the 'Magra Rohayo' scheme, Ghuge planted bamboo and mango saplings. PTI COR GK
