Civic official caught taking Rs 6 lakh bribe to sanction road works bill in Beed

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jul 11 (PTI) A senior official of a civic body in Maharashtra's Beed district was caught while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 6 lakh to sanction a bill for road works carried out in the area, an official from the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) said on Friday.

Based on a complaint, the ACB laid a trap and caught Chandrakant Chavan (35), the chief officer of the Majalgaon Municipal Council, while accepting the bribe amount at his house in Pitaji Nagari on Thursday, the official said.

He said the complainant alleged Chavan had demanded Rs 12 lakh to sanction a bill of Rs 2 crore for road works carried out in the area.

The accused official was allegedly caught accepting the first instalment of the bribe, the official stated, adding that the police also searched his house but found nothing on the premises.

He said a case will be registered against the accused. PTI AW ARU
