Thane, Jan 30 (PTI) Several hundred cobblers and their kin held a protest near Thane railway station on Monday claiming they were being harassed due to an eviction drive allegedly being carried out on the behest of a local leader.

As many as 430 stalls are permitted legally by the Maharashtra social welfare department and the Thane Municipal Corporation in civic limits but officials were threatening them with eviction, claimed Cobblers' Association president Rajabhau Chavan.

The protest dispersed after local police officials convinced them their demands would be conveyed to higher authorities, he said. PTI COR BNM BNM
