Shimla: The 90th birthday celebrations of Tibetan spiritual leader, the 14th Dalai Lama commenced at the Tsuglagkhang temple in Mcleodganj near Dharamshala on Sunday, with the Dalai Lama himself attending the event organised by the Domey (Amdo) community.
As per the Gregorian calendar, the Dalai Lama's birthday falls on July 6. However, according to the Tibetan lunar calendar, it is observed on the fifth day of the fifth month, which this year corresponds to June 30.
The week-long celebrations, organised by the Domey community—natives of the Tibetan region of Amdo where the Dalai Lama was born—will continue till July 6, a statement said.
Despite heavy rainfall, the Dalai Lama arrived at the venue in a golf cart to a rousing welcome. Around 7,000 devotees gathered across three venues to greet the Tibetan leader.
Addressing the gathering, the Dalai Lama said, "Although I am now 90 years old, I am physically healthy and well. All these years, I have worked for the good of Tibetans and the Dharma. I have also established links with people around the world and engaged in useful discussions with scientists."
"My life has been worthwhile. I have visited many countries and met all kinds of people. I feel that my life as a human being has been of benefit to the people of the world, and I dedicate the rest of my life to the benefit of others," he added.
