New Delhi, Aug 26 (PTI) A 42-year-old autorickshaw driver was arrested for allegedly drugging a passenger and robbing him of cash and valuables in central Delhi's Paharganj area, an official said on Tuesday.

The accused, identified as Junaid, a resident of Amroha in Uttar Pradesh, was apprehended near the New Delhi Railway Station on August 22. The autorickshaw used in the commission of the crime has also been seized, the police said.

The incident occurred on July 30 when the complainant boarded an autorickshaw from Paharganj for Kalkaji. Another passenger was already seated in the vehicle. En route, the co-passenger purchased a cold drink near Connaught Place and offered it to the complainant, who allegedly lost consciousness soon after consuming it, the police stated.

"On August 2, the victim regained consciousness at the AIIMS Hospital and discovered that two bags, a mobile phone, and Rs 14,000 in cash were missing. Additionally, Rs 52,000 was fraudulently transferred from his bank account as well. A case was registered at the Paharganj Police Station," said the officer.

A team scanned the CCTV footage and traced the auto's registration number. Investigation revealed that the vehicle had changed hands after its original owner's death. Further inquiries established Junaid's involvement, the police mentioned.

"During questioning, Junaid confessed to the crime and disclosed that he had been roped in by Yakub, described as the main mastermind and an interstate criminal, for a payment of Rs 10,000," the officer said, adding that Yakub is currently absconding, and efforts are on to nab him.
