New Delhi, Aug 18 (PTI) Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi on Sunday pulled up the MCD commissioner over the "worsening condition" of garbage disposal in the city and directed the official to ensure better collection and clearance of waste.
In a letter to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) commissioner, Oberoi said she was writing "to bring to your attention the worsening condition of garbage disposal in entire Delhi, especially in West Zone and Central Zone".
For the past few days, garbage collection in these areas has been irregular, resulting in an accumulation of waste on streets and in bins, she said in her letter. The stench from decomposing waste is unbearable, Oberoi said.
The mayor said she has brought this to the commissioner's notice many times but no progress has been made.
"There is simply a blame game between MCD officials and the waste management concessionaires," she said in her letter.
The mayor said it is the responsibility of the MCD commissioner to ensure proper waste management. However, it seems that the MCD machinery is failing on the ground, Oberoi said.
She directed the MCD commissioner to ensure proper garbage collection and disposal across Delhi, and take the strongest possible action against officials of areas where garbage disposal is not happening in a timely manner.
The mayor also asked the commissioner to accompany her for daily inspections from August 20 to September 2 to the 12 zones of the MCD to ensure proper cleanliness and sanitation.
"Garbage collection and disposal will be the personal responsibility of the MCD commissioner, who will be held responsible for any unsanitary conditions in any part of the city," Oberoi said. PTI MHS ANB ANB
