New Delhi, Jul 21 (PTI) Delhi Police has arrested two men wanted in more than two dozen cases of burglary across Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, officials said on Monday.
Akbar alias Firoz alias Babu (40) and Ramesh alias Kallu (42) were arrested on July 18 from near Shivaji Park in Minto Road, DCP (Central) Nidhin Valsan said.
At least 16 burglary cases have been solved with their arrest, including high-profile heists reported from Old Rajinder Nagar and CR Park in the national capital, the officer said.
“Police have recovered stolen gold jewellery worth over Rs 12 lakh from their possession,” the DCP said.
The breakthrough came during the investigation of a house burglary reported on May 27 from Old Rajinder Nagar, where the complainant returned home to find the house ransacked and valuables, including gold, silver and diamond jewellery and around Rs 20,000 in cash, missing, he said.
A case was registered at the Rajinder Nagar police station and the accused were traced and arrested after a brief chase.
“During interrogation, the duo confessed to their involvement in the Rajinder Nagar burglary and a major heist in CR Park on June 2, where they looted 1 kg gold, 1 kg silver jewellery and Rs 20 lakh in cash,” Valsan said.
The duo, both habitual burglars and proclaimed offenders, changed locations frequently to avoid detection, police said.
“Akbar was involved in at least 20 previous criminal cases in Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, while Ramesh was named in 13 criminal cases,” the DCP said.
The accused led the police to a jhuggi in Seemapuri where they kept the stolen items.
They also disclosed the identity of a third accomplice, Monu alias Abhishek, who is currently absconding. Efforts are underway to trace and arrest him.
Akbar was declared a proclaimed offender in a 2018 burglary case at the Prashant Vihar police station, while Ramesh was named in a 2016 arms case registered at the Shahdara police station and another in 2004 at the Nand Nagri police station, the officer said. PTI SSJ ARI
