Bhopal, Jun 26 (PTI) The families of "Loktantra Senanis" (those who fought against Emergency) will get priority in government schemes and all efforts will be taken for their welfare, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said on Thursday.

Emergency was declared in India by the then Indira Gandhi government on June 25 in 1975, resulting in civil liberties being suspended and imposition of several other curbs. It was lifted on March 21, 1977.

Addressing a regional conference of those who fought against imposition of Emergency, Yadav said, "The government is introducing new schemes every day to bring light in the lives of the people of the state. If eligible, the families of those who fought against Emergency will also be given priority in all these government schemes. The MP government will leave no stone unturned for the welfare of such fighters and their families." Yadav said "Loktantra Senanis" above the age of 70 will be given free treatment through Ayushman Card and can also avail the PM Air Ambulance facility if needed.

"Democracy is an integral part of Indian civilization and culture. It is not just a system of governance, but is the soul and identity of our lifestyle. Democracy has been ingrained in the Indian psyche since ancient times and its roots are deep in our traditions. Our present democracy is the result of the tireless struggle and sacrifice of these senanis," he added.

Addressing another programme, Yadav said the Congress' decision to impose Emergency murdered the Constitution and democracy and was a dark chapter than can never be forgotten.

June 25 is observed as "Samvidhan Hatya Diwas" to ensure the new generation knows about how the country slipped into dictatorship during Emergency, he said.

Hailing the progress the state has made in the last 18 months under his rule, Yadav said, "See the self-reliance of Madhya Pradesh that Delhi Metro is running on our electricity." PTI MAS BNM
