New Delhi: Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva on Saturday alleged a "pre-planned conspiracy" to disturb communal harmony after glass shards were found scattered along a stretch of the Kanwar Yatra route in Shahdara.
Addressing a press conference, Sachdeva claimed that the incident appeared to be the work of "anti-social elements" and warned that it could have led to a major accident or unrest had pilgrims been present on the track.
"Small and large glass pieces were deliberately spread across a long stretch. This clearly indicates a planned attempt to disrupt peace during the yatra," he said.
He also targeted some political parties, accusing them of indulging in appeasement politics and questioned their silence on the matter.
"Their continued silence on such a serious incident makes their intentions appear suspicious," he added.
Delhi Police is investigating the incident and forensic teams have been deployed to examine the site, officials said.
Sachdeva also lauded the arrangements made by the Delhi government under Chief Minister Rekha Gupta for the Kanwar Yatra, saying special tracks have been laid across the city, medical camps set up, and funds transferred directly to Kanwar committees to ensure smooth arrangements.
He urged authorities to identify and punish those responsible and appealed to the public to maintain peace and not fall prey to provocation.
