Shimla, Jul 3 (PTI) Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu flagged off 24 state-of-the-art Volvo buses here and expressed the state government's commitment to providing world-class transportation facilities while transforming Himachal Pradesh into a 'Green Energy State.
Addressing a gathering on Wednesday evening at Solan's Kyari Ghat, he mentioned that during the current government's tenure, a significant amount of funding was allocated to strengthen the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC).
"Over the past two years, the government has provided an annual grant of Rs 1,000 crore to ensure convenient and comfortable transport services for the public. The state government has procured 500 diesel buses, 300 electric buses, and approximately 30 Volvo buses. To further enhance transport services in the future, the government plans to purchase 100 Tempo Travellers," he said.
He also noted that the HRTC currently receives a monthly subsidy of Rs 60 crore.
The chief minister acknowledged that due to limited rail and air connectivity in the state, road transport remains the primary mode of travel for most residents, with HRTC buses serving as their main means of transportation.
"Efforts are continuously being made to improve the corporation's services for the convenience of commuters. Extensive work is underway to develop Himachal as a 'Green Energy State,' and we are actively promoting hydrogen-powered e-buses. In line with the vision of a greener Himachal, more charging stations will be set up across the state, with an investment of Rs 110 crore to realise the dream of a Green Energy State," he added.
Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, who was also present on the occasion, emphasised that the corporation's buses are essential for the people of the state, with four to five lakh passengers travelling daily.
"Over the last two years, the government has operated approximately 250 diesel buses and plans to add 250 new buses to the fleet soon. HRTC buses provide services to even the most remote areas of the state and connect the longest Delhi-Leh route," he said.
Agnihotri also highlighted that the government has granted various financial benefits to the corporation's employees over the past two years, including the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) and arrears of allowances.
"New bus stands were also being constructed across the state as per requirements," he said. PTI COR MPL MPL
