Palghar, Jun 27 (PTI) The excise department has seized smuggled Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) worth Rs 10.35 lakh in Maharashtra's Palghar district, an official said on Friday.

Acting on a tip-off that a large consignment of IMFL was being smuggled into the district, the department kept several key locations under surveillance on June 25 and 26, said Ganesh Bargaje, superintendent of state excise. "Our teams intercepted a tempo and two cars and found that they were carrying IMFL meant solely for sale in the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and not in Maharashtra," he said.

Besides the liquor, the three vehicles, estimated to be worth Rs 23 lakh, were also seized.

Rasik Bhoye and Dinesh Nadge, both residents of Jawhar in the district, were arrested, while another man, who was driving one of the cars, managed to flee leaving the car behind, Bargaje added.

The accused were booked under the Maharashtra Prohibition Act. "We are now probing the source of the IMFL consignment and where it was heading," the official said. PTI COR KRK
