Important cases heard in the Supreme Court on Friday, November 25:

* Over four years after decriminalising consensual gay sex between adults, the SC sought response from the central government to separate pleas by two gay couples seeking enforcement of their right to marry and a direction to the authorities to register their marriage under the Special Marriage Act.

* SC dismissed NIA's plea challenging the bail granted by the Bombay High Court to scholar-activist Anand Teltumbde in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case.

* In a relief to the state government, the SC stayed the Calcutta High Court order for a CBI investigation into the filing of an application by the West Bengal Central School Service Commission (SSC) in a case related to the teachers' recruitment scam.

* Resisting the SC's attempt to revisit the 2016 demonetisation exercise, the government said the court cannot decide a matter when no tangible relief can be granted by way of "putting the clock back" and "unscrambling a scrambled egg".

* SC modified its June 15, 2021 order and directed that a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each be paid to seven fishermen and the legal heirs of two others, who were affected in an incident of firing by two Italian marines on a boat off the Kerala coast in February 2012.

* SC closed the suo motu proceedings it had initiated in 2016 for filling up the vacancies in the Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT) after the Centre informed 23 members have been appointed to the panel including 11 judicial members earlier this month. PTI ABA RCJ
