Jamshedpur, Dec 16 (PTI) A man allegedly killed his girlfriend in Jharkhand's East Singhbhum district on Tuesday and then died by suicide, police said.

Jyotika Hembram (25), a chowkidar at the Potka police station, was on field duty near Chota Sikdi on Hata-Jadugora Road when Ganesh Majhi attacked her with a knife, they said.

Ganesh slit her throat, killing her on the spot and fled, they added.

During the course of the investigation, police said they identified her boyfriend as the suspect and launched a search for him. When they reached him, Majhi's body was found hanging from the ceiling.

"Jyoti had joined as a chowkidar in April. She was in a relationship with Ganesh, but later refused to marry him, which is suspected to be the reason behind the incident. He was jobless and was pressurising her to leave the job to stay at home, which she refused," said Manoj Kumar Murmu, the officer-in-charge of the Potka police station. PTI BS SOM
