Mandsaur, Jul 5 (PTI) Police used water cannons on Saturday to disperse a large crowd protesting in Mandsaur in Madhya Pradesh against Karni Sena national president Jeevan Singh Sherpur being booked in a police case related to extortion and assault, an official said.
The protest by the Karni Sena, an organisation that claims to represent the Rajput community, was held in front of the office of the Superintendent of Police.
As per police, Sherpur was booked after he reached a liquor shop on June 26 along with associates and sought Rs 1 lakh per month from those running the outlet. The employees of the shop were assaulted and subjected to casteist abuse when they refused to entertain Sherpur's extortion demand.
The incident took place in Behpur village here, said Mandsaur SP Abhishek Anand.
Those booked under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act are Sherpur, Pushpendra Singh, Indrapal Singh, Nagendra Singh, Kuldeep Singh, Sachin and Devi Singh, he said.
Sherpur, who led the protest during the day, refuted the allegations and claimed police had registered a false FIR against him.
Sherpur has 12 cases against his name in Mandsaur, Ratlam and Neemuch districts, as per police. PTI COR LAL BNM
