Puducherry, Jan 26 (PTI) The 74th Republic Day was celebrated here on Thursday with Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory Tamilisai Soundararajan unfurling the tricolour. Territorial Chief Minister N Rangasamy, his Cabinet colleagues, Assembly Speaker R Selvam, legislators, freedom fighters and officials were in attendance. After the flag-hoisting, the Lieutenant Governor inspected a guard of honour presented by the police. Later, she presented medals and awards to police personnel, shield to various schools that produced impressive results at the public examinations.
Different government departments presented tableaux highlighting the schemes implemented by them.
Soundararajan took a salute at the marchpast presented by various contingents of police, home guards, fire service personnel and NCC cadets, among others.
In her message, the Lt Governor highlighted the performance of the administration in different fields and said it was always concerned about the welfare of the people.
It is not only paying attention to the economy but also to the health and hygiene of the people, she said. "The territorial government handled the third wave of COVID-19 minimal mortality rate when compared to the national average," she said.
She further said the country has assumed presidency of the G20 for the period December 2022-November 2023. Various meetings were being held at various levels across the country. "One such G20 meeting has been scheduled to be held here on January 30 which is not only a pride for the Union Territory but it has given an opportunity to showcase our heritage and cultural values, art and crafts and talents of artisans globally. We would capitalise on this opportunity to promote Puducherry as a tourist destination to attract tourists from across the world," she said.
Later, the Chief Minister unfurled the tricolour on the Assembly premises where the Speaker and legislators were present. PTI COR NVG NVG
