Thane, Jan 23 (PTI) An offence has been registered after a man in Maharashtra's Thane district was allegedly blackmailed by an unidentified person who threatened to post an obscene photograph of his wife on social media if he did not pay him Rs 5 lakh, police said on Monday.
The police on Sunday registered a case under sections 385 (extortion), 500 (defamation) and other relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code and Information Technology Act, an official said.
According to the complainant, some unidentified person had hacked into his wife's mobile phone and gained access to her photographs. He doctored the image to make it them appear obscene and sent it to her, he said.
The unidentified caller later sent the photograph to the complainant and threatened to post the same on social media if he did not pay him Rs 5 lakh, the official said, adding that the threat calls were made between January 19 and 20. PTI COR ARU ARU
