Man gets life imprisonment for murder

Gangtok, Jul 12 (PTI) A court here on Saturday sentenced a person to life imprisonment for murdering a man in Gangtok's Samdong Bazar area two years ago.

The District and Sessions Judge of Special Division-I, Gangtok, Jyoti Kharka convicted Rayshop Rai, a resident of Middle Samdong in Gangtok district, for the murder of Rukesh Rai on July 28, 2023..

The accused was found guilty under Section 302 (murder) and Section 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code and sentenced to life imprisonment.

According to the prosecution, the incident dates back to July 28, 2023, when the accused, Rayshop Rai, engaged in a heated altercation with Rukesh Rai near a kutcha house in a forested area close to Samdong Bazar.

Later that night, after ensuring his family members were asleep, the accused allegedly took a sharp-edged weapon (bamphok) and went to the deceased’s residence, where he was sleeping in a room.

Rayshop Rai reportedly called the victim outside and then attacked him multiple times, killing him on the spot. The matter was reported to Singtam Police Station the following morning, they said.

The investigation was led by sub-inspector Phur Tshering Lepcha. PTI COR RG
