Mumbai, Jul 11 (PTI) A man was arrested for allegedly cheating online fraud victims after promising to help them recover their lost money, a police official said on Friday.
He was luring them by claiming he was part of the 1930 cyber helpline and National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, the official said.
Anil Madhukar Darekar, a resident of Panel in neighbouring Navi Mumbai, was held on Thursday by personnel of West Region Cyber Police Station, he said.
"Darekar used to dupe the victims of the cyber fraud cases by claiming he would help them recover the money they had lost. He was demanding money from them for this purpose. Mumbai police received several complaints about him. He used to send his I-card via Whatsapp to victims, who used to get convinced," the official said.
"The accused then sent the victims his bank account details and UPI number and used to collect money citing various reasons, including court-related work and lawyers fees, to get their lost money. He was arrested under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Information Technology Act for impersonation and cheating," the official said. PTI DC BNM
