New Delhi, Jan 24 (PTI) The Delhi Police on Tuesday formally charged Aftab Amin Poonawala with killing his live-in partner Shraddha Walkar at their Mehrauli residence and causing disappearance of evidence.

The finer details of the charge sheet are not yet known.

The city police filed a 6,629-page charge sheet against Poonawala in the Saket court where he expressed his desire to change his counsel.

Meanwhile, Metropolitan Magistrate Aviral Shukla extended his judicial custody by two weeks till February 7.

Poonawala is accused of strangling his live-in partner Shraddha Walkar and chopping her body into pieces before dumping them in different parts of the city over several days.

"It is voluminous," the judge remarked when told that the charge sheet was spread over a staggering 6,629 pages.

The charge sheet has been filed under sections 302 (punishment for murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender) of the Indian Penal Code, a court source said.

Poonawala was produced before the court through video conference on expiry of his judicial custody.

He told the court that he wanted to change his advocate M S Khan and insisted that the charge sheet be only provided to his new counsel.

The judge told Poonawala the charge sheet was under consideration and cognizance was likely to be taken on February 7.

Once the court has taken cognizance of the charge sheet, it will then be provided to his advocate, the metropolitan magistrate told Poonawala. PTI MNR TIR MNR SK SK
