Ujjain, Jun 21 (PTI) Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Saturday observed the astronomical phenomenon of `zero shadow' at the Varahamihira Astronomical Observatory located at Dongla near here.
During his visit, he also explained to those present the concept of time variation and calendar calculation through solar movement.
The CM explained the astronomical science based on the Indian knowledge tradition like a teacher, a government release said.
At 12.28 PM on every June 21, which is summer solstice, the shadow of `Shanku Yantra', a conical instrument at the observatory, disappears.
Yadav said that in ancient times, Dongla was a major centre for time calculation. "It will be re-established as a centre of time calculation," the CM stated as he also interacted with students visiting the observatory on the occasion.
Sanatan culture speaks not of the manifestation of power through war or violence, but of the welfare of the world through education and science, the chief minister told the students.
"In the Indian knowledge tradition, our ancestors made science part of our lifestyle, and this scientific lifestyle has kept our culture alive till today," he added. PTI LAL KRK
