Plaster chunks fall from balconies of 7-storey building in Thane city; residents moved out

Thane, Jun 18 (PTI) Chunks of plaster fell from the balconies on second and third floors of a residential building in Thane city on Wednesday morning, leading authorities to order an evacuation as the seven-storey structure has also developed cracks, civic officials said.

Chief of the Disaster Management Cell of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) Yasin Tadvi said no one was injured in the incident in the 40-year-old building.

An immediate structural audit of the building will be carried out, he informed.

According to information received at the Disaster Management Cell, at around 9:45 am, plaster chunks from the balconies on second and third floors of the building, Sunflower Tower, gave way.

The remaining plaster is in a very dangerous condition and the building has also developed cracks, Tadvi informed.

The seven-storey residential structure has not been listed as "dangerous", he clarified.

A Disaster Management Cell team along with fire department personnel rushed to the spot and cleared the debris. Disaster Management Cell staff and fire department personnel evacuated the building for safety reasons, Tadvi said.

The building has 24 rooms and two godowns on the ground floor. PTI COR RSY
