Chandigarh, Jun 28 (PTI) The family members of Jaggu Bhagwanpuria Saturday held a protest at the Batala bypass near the Amritsar-Pathankot national highway by keeping the body of the gangster's mother on the road, a day after she was shot dead allegedly by a rival gang.
Police said multiple teams were formed to probe the case and CCTV footage were being scanned to identify and nab the assailants who opened fire on Bhagwanpuria's mother Harjit Kaur (52) and another person accompanying her on Thursday night.
The bike-borne assailants fired upon their car on the Qadian Road in Punjab's Batala, in which Karanvir Singh was declared dead at the Batala Civil Hospital, while Harjit Kaur was referred to a hospital in Amritsar. She later succumbed to the bullet injuries.
Bhagwanpuria's family held a demonstration with Kaur's body, demanding demanded the arrest of those who were behind the killings. They also said they will not cremate the body till they get justice.
The protest led to traffic obstruction for some time and a police team tried to persuade the relatives to end their sit-in, assuring them that they will get justice.
Police said efforts were on to nab the assailants.
Harjit Kaur, who hails from Bhagwanpur, had been living in Batala in a rented house for the past two to three years.
In an unverified social media post, Bhagwanupuria's rival gang claimed responsibility for the attack, indicating that Karanvir was the target.
When asked about the claim, police parried the question by saying investigations were underway.
In March, jailed gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria was detained by the Narcotics Control Bureau under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT NDPS) Act and shifted from central jail in Bathinda to Assam's Silchar jail.
Bhagwanpuria was already in the custody of Punjab police in the 2022 singer Sidhu Moosewala murder case. PTI CHS SKY SKY
