New Delhi: As 64% votes made 64-year-old National Democratic Alliance-backed candidate Droupadi Murmu the youngest President of India, BJP nearly achieved the target set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Although there was no official number quoted by the party, sources in BJP told NewsDrum that it was working day and night to secure 65% votes.
Besides the support announced by various non-NDA parties, it was not possible to meet the target of 65% had 17 MPs and 125 MLAs not cross-voted in her support.
Not only BJP had taken these cross-voting numbers into the account, but the party had also expected more cross-voting in the name of conscience call.
The appeal for listening to their inner voice made by opposition-backed candidate Yashwant Sinha to his ex-colleagues in BJP and NDA appeared to have failed.
In fact, Sinha drew blank from three states - Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim and Nagaland.
On the other hand, Murmu failed to touch double-digit in terms of the number of MLAs supporting her in Kerala, Telangana, Punjab and Delhi.
She got only one MLA’s vote in Kerala while only 3 MLAs voted for her in Telangana.
8 MLAs each in Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP-ruled states Delhi and Punjab voted for Murmu.
Punjab witnessed two opposition MLAs voting in favour of Murmu as parties supporting her were Siromani Akali Dal (3 MLAs), BSP (1 MLA) and BJP (2 MLAs).
Assam, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh assemblies witnessed a significant number of Opposition MLAs voting for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance's candidate.
Around 22 MLAs in Assam and 20 in Madhya Pradesh assemblies have apparently cross-voted. Six opposition MLAs each from Bihar and Chhattisgarh, four from Goa and 10 from Gujarat may also have voted for Murmu.
Murmu's tribal background appeared to have drawn support from Opposition MLAs from Jharkhand too, where the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha had already announced support for her.
Set to be India's first tribal and also the youngest president, Murmu received maximum votes from Uttar Pradesh and Maharastra assemblies while Sinha got his largest share of support from West Bengal and Tamil Nadu in terms of vote value.
Uttar Pradesh also witnessed cross-voting where Sinha got only 111 votes out of 125 MLAs from the Samajwadi Party alliance.
