Kolkata, Jan 25 (PTI) A rally was brought out in Kolkata on Wednesday under the banner of 'Nagarik Mancha' (Citizen's Forum) demanding the release of ISF MLA Naushad Siddique and 17 other party workers who were arrested by the police for allegedly indulging in violent protests on January 21.

Members of the Indian Secular Front (ISF), during a meeting in Esplanade area in the heart of the city, had resorted to protests claiming that its workers were attacked by ruling Trinamool Congress supporters at Bhangar in South 24 Parganas district when they were coming to attend the event.

Several police officials, including IPS officers and officers in-charge of two police stations, were injured as the protesters clashed with the force, following which the ISF legislator from Bhangar assembly constituency and 17 other party workers were arrested.

On Wednesday, the forum took out the rally, in which ISF workers reportedly participated, from Sealdah demanding the release of Siddique and the other party workers, who were remanded to police custody by a city court till February 1.

They were also demanding the arrest of TMC supporters who had allegedly attacked ISF workers when they were coming to Esplanade from Bhangar, a distance of about 30 km, on January 21 to attend the party meeting.

The participants dispersed after the rally reached Esplanade on Wednesday, a police official said, adding that traffic movement in the heart of the city returned to normal in the evening. PTI AMR ACD ACD
