New Delhi: Supreme Court of India Sunday faced massive backlash for its double standards in dealing with bail pleas from Teesta Setalvad and YouTuber Manish Kashyap or several such accused who were denied bail or not entertained by the apex court.

SC on Saturday night protected social activist Teesta Setalvad from arrest and stayed for a week the Gujarat High Court order rejecting her plea for regular bail and asking her to surrender immediately in a case of the alleged fabrication of evidence to frame innocent people in 2002 post-Godhra riot cases.

Netizens questioned the double standards of the Supreme Court pointing out the difference in the gravity of the crimes committed by Setalvad and Kashyap.

Kashyap is accused of creating a fake YouTube video regarding migrant workers facing threats in Tamil Nadu and booked under National Security Act (NSA).

It is not new for the Supreme Court to offer differential treatment to powerful and influential left ideologues.

Recently, the court protected Congress leader Pawan Khera who allegedly abused PM Modi’s father.

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud has been criticised in the past for swiftly taking up his college friend, senior advocate and Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singvi’s mentions and cases on priority.

The way Setalvad’s case was heard late at night on a Saturday during vacation, Chandrachud’s actions raised questions about his intent and many suspected that the apex court was predetermined to give relief to Setalvad.

CJI has always maintained that bail is the rule while jail is an exception. Netizens also questioned the fairness of CJI’s statement in two different cases.
