Scrap godown gutted in fire; nobody injured

Thane, Jun 20 (PTI) A scrap godown that stocked various items made of cardboard, wood and plastic was gutted in a major fire at Bhandarli in Maharashtra's Thane district on Friday morning, an official said.

The incident occurred shortly after 9 am and nobody was reported injured in it, said Yasin Tadvi, chief of Thane civic body's disaster management cell.

The godown is located next to the MHADA Colony in Uttar Shiv village on the Mumbra-Panvel Road.

"A local resident alerted us about the fire around 9.15 am. The godown, measuring approximately 2,000 sqft was stocked with plastic material, cardboard and wooden items, all of which were completely gutted in the blaze," he said.

Police personnel along with fire brigade teams from Thane and various nodes in Navi Mumbai reached the spot and a firefighting operation was launched. The blaze was brought under control by noon and cooling operations are currently underway, Tadvi added.

The cause of the fire is being investigated, he said. PTI COR NP
