Mumbai, Jun 23 (PTI) A speeding tanker crashed through a bridge safety barrier on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway on Monday and landed into the creek, leading to the death of the driver, police said.

Prima facie, the driver lost his control of the wheel when the vehicle, headed towards Thane, was crossing the old Versova bridge in the Ghodbunder area of Thane.

The heavy vehicle broke the iron safety barrier of the bridge and fell into the creek, an official said, adding that the incident led to a traffic jam on the busy Ghodbunder Road.

He said an operation was launched using heavy cranes to lift the tanker which sank after the accident.

The body of the driver has been retrieved, the official said. Police are trying to confirm whether the deceased was accompanied by an assistant. PTI ZA NSK
