New Delhi: Trinamool Congress MPs, including Sagarika Ghose, Sukhendu Sekhar Roy and Saket Gokhale, continued their dharna at the Jai Hind Camp here on Tuesday over the disconnection of electricity to the settlement dominated by Bengali-speaking people.

They were joined by TMC leader and Rajya Sabha MP Derek O'Brien this morning.

Besides Ghose, Roy and Gokhale, TMC MP Dola Sen is also sitting on the 24-hour protest, which began at 3 pm on Monday. The locals have joined the MPs in the protest.

Electricity was disconnected to the camp following a court order on July 8 in an encroachment case.

Ghose posted a video of some locals on X in which they deplored the action.

Naib Hussain, a resident who works as a driver, said they have identity proofs like Aadhaar card, and driver's licence.

"These IDs have been given by the government of India. We are Indians... We have the proof, why are we being insulted like this, we should be given respect like everyone else," he said in the video.

Ghose said in the post, "Rooma from Cooch Behar is a Bengali who was targeted as a 'Bangladeshi' and imprisoned by Delhi Police and had to show her grandfather's land records before she was finally released."

TMC MPs had also visited the locality on Sunday and assured the locals of help on behalf of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The Trinamool Congress has alleged that Bengali-speaking migrant workers are being harassed in several states, and has cited cases of West Bengal residents being pushed to the Bangladesh border.

The West Bengal chief minister and TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee are set to take out a protest march in Kolkata on the issue later in the day.

Locals have alleged they are facing discrimination for being Bengali-speaking people. They claimed that Delhi police conducted a verification a few months ago, and not a single "Bangladeshi or Rohingya" was found in the locality.

The informal settlement lies between the posh Vasant Kunj and the urban village of Masoodpur, with most of the around 5,000 residents claiming that they are from Coochbehar in West Bengal.
