Union Tourism Minister lays foundation for Rs 95 cr Akhanda Godavari project in Andhra

Rajamahendravaram (Andhra Pradesh), June 26 (PTI) Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat laid the foundation stone for the Akhanda Godavari project at Pushkara Ghat here in East Godavari district on Thursday, calling it a future national icon.

Shekhawat said the over Rs 95 crore ambitious riverfront project aims to transform the Godavari bank into a cultural, spiritual, and heritage-rich tourist destination.

"It is a joy to lay the foundation. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, tourism has accelerated. Andhra Pradesh is developing spiritually with strong leadership," said Shekhawat at the ceremony.

A major highlight of the project is a 1.2 km pedestrian walkway across the historic Havelock Bridge, featuring cafes, art installations, themed spans, and an interpretation center showcasing the city's heritage.

He commended Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan for their commitment to impactful projects and ensuring Centre-State coordination for rapid tourism-driven development.

The Union Minister said the project is expected to be completed ahead of the upcoming Godavari Pushkaralu festival, significantly boosting tourist footfall and enhancing visitor infrastructure.

Shekhawat noted that India's global tourism share is rising steadily, and Andhra Pradesh is well-positioned to emerge as a spiritual and cultural tourism hub.

Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh tourism minister K Durgesh said as part of the project, Havelock Bridge, Bridge Lanka, Pushkar Ghat, Kadiyam Nurseries, Nidadavolu Fort, Sattemma Temple, and the Godavari Canal will be developed as a tourism circuit.

Durgesh further said the state government will develop the 127-year-old Havelock Bridge, built by the British, into a scenic tourist attraction. PTI MS STH ROH
