In an unprecedented move, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday removed Director General of Police (DGP) Mukul Goel from his post for inefficiency and neglecting his work, an official statement said.

Goel had taken over the role in June last year and has been in controversy since his joining.

On his joining, Delhi-based Manohar Lal Jewellers had released an advertisement in the newspapers of Western UP to congratulate Goel.

Goel was also in the news for other reasons. In September last year, Goel reached Hazratganj Police station to conduct sudden inspection and removed Inpector Shyam Babu Shukla in front of the media. Shukla was being treated for Dengue. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had to step into this matter.

In October, Goel did not go to Lakhimpur Kheri when four people died in the infamous clash involving farmers.

Previously, Goel was ADG Law and Order in Akhilesh Yadav government for a long period and it is alleged that he did not show interest in Yogi's bulldozer campaign because of his closeness with Yadav.

Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar, who camped in Lakhimpur in absence of Goel, has been given the additional charge of the state's police chief, Additional Chief Secretary (Information) Navneet Sehgal told PTI.

Goel has been made the Director General (DG) of the Civil Defence department, the statement said.

It added that Goel was removed from the post of DGP for neglecting official work, not taking interest in departmental work and inefficiency.

Goel, a 1987-batch IPS officer, was appointed the Uttar Pradesh police chief in June last year.

Before that, he had served as an additional director general of the Border Security Force.

Born in Muzaffarnagar, Goel has a B.Tech degree in Electrical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. (With inputs from PTI)
