Sanket Mahadev Sargar opens India's medal tally at Commonwealth Games, bringing back home a Silver medal for India.

Sanket Mahadev Sargr hails from the weightlifting belt of Sangli in Maharashtra, born on October 16, 2000. His father is a farmer and works at a paan shop.

Sanket started his weightlifting journey at the age of 13. This was Sanket's first entry into the Commonwealth Games.

Sanket holds the national record for Men's 55 kg weightlifting which he broke last year at Commonwealth Championship held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Sanket attributed his medal to freedom fighters who fought for India's Independence struggle as India is celebrating its 75th Independence Year as Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.

In an interesting, nail-biting but painful event Sanket who was leading from the front from the start of the game injures himself while attempting 141kg on his second Clean and Jerk attempt. Sanket still attempted to go for his third attempt and fails again.

Sanket Sargar finishes second in the men's 55kg weightlifting event to open India's medal count in Birmingham. He lifted a combined weight of 248kg (113 in Snatch and 135kg in C&J) and in the process injured himself. In the end, denied gold by the Malaysian by just a kilo.
